Vital Appointment: Joining the Frontlines of Blood and Tissue Safety

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability (ACBTSA)

I am deeply honored to announce my acceptance of the invitation to join the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability (ACBTSA). This opportunity allows me to serve my country and provide a crucial voice for the transfusion medicine and cell therapy community, ensuring the safety of our patients and donors.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Xavier Becerra, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, for this prestigious appointment. Secretary Becerra's leadership and dedication to public health have been instrumental in advancing healthcare equity and safety across the nation. I am also immensely thankful to the esteemed members of the ACBTSA for their warm welcome and support as I embark on this vital role.

The Role of the ACBTSA

The ACBTSA plays a pivotal role in advising the Secretary of Health and Human Services on a wide range of policy issues related to blood, blood products, and tissues. This advisory committee is tasked with ensuring the safety, availability, and efficacy of these critical components of healthcare. The committee's responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating Safety Measures: Assessing current safety protocols and recommending improvements to protect both donors and recipients.

  • Policy Development: Advising on policies that govern the collection, distribution, and utilization of blood and tissue products.

  • Addressing Emerging Issues: Identifying and addressing new challenges and threats to blood and tissue safety, such as emerging infectious diseases.

  • Promoting Public Awareness: Enhancing public understanding and awareness of the importance of blood and tissue safety.

 Commitment to Service

As a member of the ACBTSA, I am committed to leveraging my expertise and experience to contribute meaningfully to the committee's mission. My background in transfusion medicine and cell therapy equips me with the knowledge and insights necessary to advocate for the highest standards of safety and care. I am dedicated to:

  • Patient Safety: Ensuring that all recommendations and policies prioritize the safety and well-being of patients from blood transfusion consent to hemovigiliance.

  • Donor Protection: Advocating for measures that protect the health and rights of donors. Let's discuss iron replacement, donation intervals, and donor experience.

  • Healthcare Equity: Working towards equitable access to safe blood and tissue products for all communities in need. Sickle cell disease treatment and awareness is a #1 priority. #Red4Life

  • Healthcare Innovation: Embracing and promoting innovative technologies and practices that can enhance the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of blood and tissue services. The next generation of scientists are going to embrace and challenge the world like no other generation before.
